We are about 1.5 months into the school year and are learning so much! Our class had an opportunity to take a hike up Rattlesnake Gulch in beautiful Millcreek Canyon. We learned more about the mountain habitat and enjoyed nature for a day! Third grade also got a chance to plant dissect tulip bulbs and learn more about how they grow when Thanksgiving Point staff came and visited. We each planted a tulip bulb in the planter boxes outside. We get to track their progress over the school year and compare how and when our bulbs are growing with schools across the nation and beyond. In the spring, we are invited to go to the tulip festival at Thanksgiving Point Gardens as a result of our participation in Tulips Journey North. We have also enjoyed learning new songs each Friday with the other third grade classes in preparation for a spring program.
Thanks to everyone who were able to support the school with the school fundraiser. I also want to thank those who were able to contribute to our classroom rewards and incentives with either items, or $ donations.
The big concepts students should have mastered in math at this time are:
-rounding to the nearest ten and hundred
-adding and subtracting up to four digits with and without regrouping
-estimating
-multiple step word (story) problems
-reading and interpreting graphs
-place value
We have begun using varied multiplication strategies and will continue learning basic multiplication and division. It is important for students to be able to do simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division without using their fingers to count, by the end of third grade. If they can master this skill, they will be much more successful in 4th grade and beyond!
Parents, please continue to check your child's planner each night and initial it. Homework is due at the end of each week, and we will be having a homework party at the end of each quarter to celebrate those who have successfully turned in their weekly homework contracts each week. It's not too late to turn in old homework, either :-)
As always, please email me with any questions or comments you have! [email protected]
